Those 70s Florals

Riann Henkel, Sphere Trending Trend Futurist, Director of Interior Home

Wrapping up our focus on nostalgia, we’re highlighting a powerful pattern statement we saw while trendspotting Paris and at the most recent Maison & Objet tradeshow. 70s pattern play and simple daisy shapes brought a sophisticated dose of retro!

Retrofit Back to Community

By Susan Yashinsky, Sphere Trending VP Innovation Trends

As we continue this month showcasing recent travels and research, the reemergence of nostalgia is getting stronger.

Whether it is housing trends that connect us back to community or reminiscent retail trends that bring communal shopping back, our need for past comforts is growing stronger.

A OnePoll survey shows that the average person “shops small” 213 times throughout the year.  The 2023+ version of ‘Mom and Pop’ retail includes big-brand neighborhood stores, pop-up events and store-within-a-store.”

Societal trends are fueling the importance of nostalgic patterns, particularly the rise in single households (which brings a greater desire for connectivity) and record consumer anxiety around climate, politics and affordability (causing a greater emotional need for experiences and positivity).

Vintage Vibes

By Cathy Schneider, Sphere Trending Trend Futurist, Director of Color Theory

While the appeal of retro is not necessarily new news, we continue to see it popping up at tradeshows and trendspotting. At the most recent High Point furniture market, vintage vibes were strong – especially with patterns and soft goods.

These layered fabrics felt fresh yet familiar – we can just picture them adding the perfect accent to a cool, cozy home.

60’s & 70’s Chic

By Lonnie Johnson, Sphere Trending Market Analyst

Forward fashion that looks back to an era of simplicity and fun with easy lines and tons of color.  Pantone suggests it’s all about transformation and imagination. “Colors for NYFW Spring 2024 inspire feeling of release.” (Leatrice Eiseman, Executive director of the Pantone Color Institute) While the colors are rooted in nostalgia, they have been reimaged with a more modern feel.

This fashion trend conjures up disco party vibes and memories of sitcoms and movies of the time.  Remember Mrs. Roper from Three’s Company and of course the classic Saturday Night Fever movie?

As fashion is often the preview for what’s new in home design, we are also seeing the resurgence of retro styling in home decor that inspires feelings of nostalgia. Think Boho Chic Vibe or Mid-Century Modern. So, take a step back in time as the past continues to inspire how we live, how we dress and how we adapt and change with the times.

Retro Auto

By Lori Salem, Sphere Trending Market Research & Trend Analyst

This one was close to home! We visited the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this September to track new vehicle trends, along with lifestyle and design stories.

One new concept that caught our eye was the Ford Bronco Heritage Edition, sporty and fun with a playful stripe that carried inside and out. We could see this parked outside some of the new home trends we’ve been tracking as well!
